Pride and Prejudice

hand lettering book quote

This piece is a quote from one of my favorite books, pride, and prejudice. When designing this hand lettering piece, I decided to go with a modern take on the quote. To me, it seemed like something Elizabeth would have proudly spray painted somewhere. Thinking about this I designed the letters to look like dripping graffiti. The initial design was done on paper and then finished in Adobe Illustrator as a vector. I started this piece by picking a quote and sketching ideas. I did many sketches making the letters separately and making the whole piece altogether. First, I made did pencil sketches on tracing paper to readjust the letter spacing and such. Then I made a couple of sketches with sharpies to work on the silhouettes. Afterward, I took the sharpie sketch I liked best and took it into Adobe Illustrator and used the pen tool to make each letter individually. Because I made each letter individually, I was able to change which letters overlapped others. I added a white “shadow” to help distinguish the letters from each other.
